2013 International Quilt Festival/Houston
Come join the celebration at the 2013 International Quilt Festival/Houston October 31 through November 3 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Preview night, Wednesday, October 30.
This year, the show, sale, and quiltmaking academy will feature more than 1,300 quilts and textile artworks on display; over 365 hands-on classes, lectures, and special events; and shopping in more than 1,100 booths selling quilts, fabrics, books, patterns, notions, crafts, machines, and sewing supplies.
Exhibits include “SAQA: Text Messages,” “The Festival Gallery of Quilt Art:Traditions,” “The Festival Awareness Project 2013: It’s Raining Cats and Dogs,” “The Modern Quilt Guild Showcase 2013,” “World of Mother’s Dream by Reiko Kato,” and “SAQA: People and Portraits.” Plus, the 2013 editions of “In Full Bloom,” “In the American Tradition,” “Tactile Architecture™,” “Hands All Around,” and “Celebrate Spring!”
Founded in 1974, the fall edition of International Quilt Festival is the largest annual quilt show, sale, and quiltmaking academy in the world. Dubbed "The World's Fair of Quilts," by Southern Living Magazine, the show attracts more than 53,000 people from around the globe to Houston, Texas each year.
Highlights for Fall 2013:Friday Sampler –Friday morning 10 a.m. - Noon. This smorgasbord of talent features 25 Festival teachers at separate tables serving up continuous demonstrations of specialty techniques and methods while students circulate around the room informally. (A second Sampler with different topics and teachers will be held on Saturday, November 2!)The Stitch in Time Fashion Show luncheon features commentary by Bernina Fashion Show designer Marinda Stewart while you show off your wearable art creations. Friday, November 1, from Noon-2:00 p.m. (garment entry form available on website).IQA Top Winners’ Circle Recipients and their quilts will be presented along with How To Get Published by Vicki Anderson on Wednesday, Noon- 2:00 p.m. Gain valuable insights through information shared by Vicki and each of the eight top winners. Kathy Kansier (Tuesday),Hollis Chatelain (Thursday), and Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry (Saturday) round out our luncheon lecture line-up.
New in 2013
Christmas Delights Forum, 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Saturday, showcases seven excellent instructors: Freida Anderson, Nancy Brenan Daniel, Marlene Glickman, Tracie Lyn Huskamp, Sarah Ann Smith, Katrina Walker, and Cindy Walter.
Artist Development classes— Developing the quilter is as important as improving her quilting skills. Choose from a variety of classes, lectures, and panels to help you take yourself and your quilting to a new level. Coordinated by Lesley Riley.
HQ (Handi Quilter) Sweet 16 classes offer a week of hands-on classes learning more about using the HQ (Handi Quilter) Sweet 16 mid-arm machine (one person per machine) for machine quilting.
RETURNING THIS YEAR GALA ON THE GREEN! Enjoy food and drinks with fellow quilters while listening to a live band across the street from the convention center at the lush Discovery Green park. Saturday evening, 7:00-9:30 p.m. See the class catalogue for detailed information.
